MRA calls on well-wishers to help resettle Mzuzu flood victims

Public tax collector Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has called on the corporate world and other well-wishers to help in resettlement of Mzuzu City flood victims so that they become productive citizens.

Over 14 000 people were affected by the heavy rains that hit the city in April this year. Hundreds of houses were demolished and several families were left destitute. Some of the people settled in camps while others still live in the ruins.

Speaking at Kawuwa Camp in Mzuzu on Thursday where MRA made a donation of assorted items worth K3.5 million (about $5 500), MRA board chairperson Evelyn Mwapasa said there is need to help the people in camps resettle so that they go back to their normal lives.

The items donated included 300 blankets, 300 buckets, 1 000 cups, four tents and black polythene  sheeting.

“If these people remain at the camp they will not be productive citizens. So I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to the corporate world and other well-wishers to contribute to resettling of these people,” said Mwapasa.

Mzuzu City mayor William Mkandawire said Mzuzu City Council has plans to relocate people who are in disaster prone areas to safer places.

However, he said there is need for stakeholders to come in to help resettling the people and he commended MRA for donating to the victims. n
